Ramadan Journal 2017: Day 5 - Love

I love the ebb and flow of the days during Ramadan. In some ways it is so different from the usual days of the month. The day time naps, the long evenings with lots of time to do things before dinner, the surreal feeling of being awake in the small hours of the night.

I love that there seems to be more dedication as well as time to spend to the daily prayers and reading of the Quran. This is something I aspire to, but in this month it seems to become a reality.

I love the hope that this month brings – of dua’s answered, of forgiveness, of Allah’s (SWT) mercy and of his barakah in our lives. It feels as if anything is possible and any problem is surmountable with Allah (SWT)’s help.

I love to see my older children fasting and getting through the day with a sense of achievement.

I love the chance to experiment with new foods and recipes. What is it about Ramadan and special foods that gets the creativity going? This year I have learned to make smaller portions of everything because we are finding we can only eat a little and also so that a lot of food is not wasted if a recipe doesn’t taste quite right. I’ve been especially trying out different salads and ways to reuse leftovers: trying avocado for the first time, adding a spoon of shop bought coleslaw or potato salad to my salad to make it more interesting. Leftover tandoori chicken got made into chicken and potato pasties which went down a treat and leftover fruit goes into smoothies and fruit salads. I’ve also been trying out small batches of new drinks such as smoothies and this home-made pink lemonade (recipe to follow) insh’Allah.




Ramadan Journal 2017: Day 4 - List

Despite my best efforts at planning ahead and making lists, I find that a lot of our routines and timetables go out of the window during Ramadan. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing. I find that we fall into much more of an organic routine during Ramadan, based on the timings of our prayers, how much we can manage to do at any given time and how much rest we need.

I find myself going with the flow and taking a gentler approach to the day to try and avoid the headaches and tiredness that can come with the first few days of fasting. I still have to be careful not to forget things and a little planning still helps me to make better use of my time. At the moment I am still relying on my trusty Filofax domino which I have just got the new mid-year inserts for June 2017 to June 2018 for. This has all of my own, my husbands, the kids and my mother-in-law’s appointments, important dates, school dates and activities listed. It has my to-do list allocated to certain days so that these items are broken down into manageable activities, with urgent ones in red of course. I make a note of any leave I take from work, in case I have to account for my days off of work. I also track my periods and my weight in the diary. I rule off a small section on the side of each page to try and use for my meal planning. Finally my creative projects are allocated a day (in purple writing) and any social activities, fun stuff and unscheduled time is in pink. Ideas or topics to blog for any given day are noted at the bottom of each day’s space in green. This little organiser has been a bit of a life saver and helped save me from forgetting important things





The other thing I like to keep my thoughts organised is Google Keep, which I find is a lot of fun and acts as a sort of visual aid to keep things in front of me. I use it to make lists of things that matter to me and refer back to it daily as a prompt and source of motivation.




Finally, the list that I have yet to make is the one for Eid preparations. I usually do most of this before Ramadan when I am being organised, but this year distractions have meant that I am only just starting to think about it: who needs new clothes, colour schemes for décor, meal planning and whether we want to have an Eid party. This is the kind of list I enjoy most – preparing to have fun and count my blessings.

Ramadan Journal 2017: Day 3 - Mini

Mini for me is my two little "mini's” - Darling and Baby.  Whilst my older three are fasting, these two are still too small and have their own routine.  Thankfully they don't wake too early so we can all catch up on our sleep in the morning.  We try to get them to nap with us after lunch and give them dinner early in the hope they will go to bed before our evening iftaar meal.  No luck so far, they are excited and look forward to eating with us where Darling always announces that she is hungry and why aren't we eating yet.

The two of them keep me busy and feeling full to the brim with love and that feeling that you are the most special person in their world.



Ramadan Journal 2017: Day 2 - Early

Early morning and the suhoor (pre-dawn) meal have always felt a little surreal, whether my in-laws are staying and laughing and joking at 2pm or the children waking up and joining us and looking very confused at the meal and the strange hour.

This year my three elder children are fasting with us.  As it is the half-term holidays, I have allowed them to stay up later so that they have more time to eat if they want to.  They also struggle to wake up for suhoor, so last night decided to stay up all night and go to bed after the fajr (dawn) prayer (a lot of people seem to be doing this, this Ramadan).

I was dubious they could stay up and was a little annoyed at the noise I could hear when I was trying to catch an hour or two of sleep before I had to get up again - laughing, talking and for some reason running up and down stairs.


A little later I came downstairs to find the boys fast asleep and looking rather comfortable:






They were right, it was very hard for them to wake up.  It took numerous trips back from the kitchen and lots of shaking and pulling out of bed.  They got up eventually, but Gorgeous seemed to eat his whole breakfast (his fave paratha and chilli eggs) with his eyes closed.

Ramadan Journal 2017: Day 1 - Hello!

I was pleased to see that the wonderful Neelu of Neelu's Journal is hosting the Ramadan Journal 2017.  I have taken part over the last few years and enjoyed it.  In her own words, Neelu describes her the inspiration behind her Journal challenge:

"I was inspired to keep a Ramadan Journal thanks to Ali Edwards' December Daily and the idea of using a list of prompts came from Fat Mum Slim's Photo A Day. Having a pre-decided list to work on makes the whole process a tad easier for me."

Day 1. Hello

At the end of the first day of fasting, the thing that surprised me the most was how familiar it all was: trying not to pass out at suhoor (the dawn meal), wondering how I will get through the day without food to distract and occupy me, then finding myself busy enough for the day to fly by.  Getting grumpy as the day wore on, trying to get the kids to bed before iftar and failing despite my best efforts.  My older three were fasting, but that did not seem to dampen Gorgeous' enthusiasm for annoying all three of his sisters and causing floods of complaints.  I was truly fed up with a thumping headache by the time iftar rolled round and told everyone they would be banished upstairs in future or I would abandon them all and head to my mums to enjoy iftar in peace. 



My husband didn't like the sound of that and offered the perfect solution by offering to take Gorgeous to the masjid with him at iftar time.

If that sounds miserable it wasn't all bad, it was nice to have more time to pray in peace and to feel motivated to spend more time in prayer.  It felt good to find my routine with my daily reading of the Quran.  I have found a nice little pattern of reading a quarter of a chapter after each salah apart from maghrib (evening prayer), which will let me finish a chapter a day insh'Allah.  

It is nice to have a little time between clearing up the kitchen and getting the babies to bed and the night prayer (isha and taraweeh) to blog in peace and take a breather.  I am sitting with my smoothie made from left over fruit and for once not feeling bloated but rested and ready to end the day with prayers and a little self-care.

Ramadan 2017/1438 - Ramadan Kareem

Assalam-alaikam everyone and Ramadan Kareem,



Alhamdulillah, we are so blessed to find ourselves at the start of another Ramadan filled with blessings, forgiveness and mercy. A chance to get rid of bad habits, start good habits and have our duas’ (supplications) answered.

Even more, Allah (SWT) has blessed us with this opportunity to get closer to Him and to work on our relationship with Him. I pray we make the most of this golden opportunity to please Allah (SWT) find tranquillity and purify our hearts as well as our bodies insh’Allah.

May Allah (SWT) bless this Ummah during this month with an increase in iman, with forgiveness, mercy and with the acceptance of their dua’s. May He increase the rizq (sustenance) of the believers and make it easy for them and take away all of their hardships.

Please remember our brothers and sisters who are suffering in Burma, Palestine, Syria and across the world. Please don’t forget to make dua for those who are being persecuted for their faith, who are questioning their beliefs and who are alone because of their faith. 

Please remember me and my family in your dua’s insh’Allah and please forgive me if I have ever said or written anything that hurt or upset you.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) declared, 'Three men whose dua is never rejected (by Allah) are: the fasting person until he breaks his fast (in another narration, when he breaks fast), the just ruler and the one who is oppressed.' ~Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi – Hasan.


Picture of the Day 26.05.17 - Date Treats

I set some time aside this afternoon to make these date and nut slices (recipe here).  Everyone in my household loves them as do my parents.  We eat them for both suhoor (dawn meal) and iftar (the meal to break the fast) and they provide energy and nutrition, as well as tasting good.  They are also great as a gift during Ramadan.











The Healing of Ramadan

I haven’t been blogging much recently, feeling exhausted and unwell, I assumed it was just the demands of work, home, family and guests. I thought I just needed rest and that I would be back to my old self. I could see a difference in the mirror, I looked haggard and I wondered if the magic of youth was subsiding and I was starting to look my age. I veered between acceptance and denial, sometimes thinking I should accept the ageing process with grace and self-respect and sometimes thinking I would have liked a few more years of looking younger than my age and having endless energy.

Eventually the nausea kicked in and I went to see my doctor and got a diagnosis. In the past I have become unwell and just assumed I need to lose weight, get fit or stop being lazy, until the doctor found otherwise. I am not very good at listening to my body and treating it with the gentleness and care it deserves. This time round again, I had a problem and needed treatment which I finally got round to having. I am slowly starting to feel like myself again, but the treatment has left me feeling weak and tiring easily. I have been advised not to exercise for a month and to let my body heal with lots of rest and nutritious food. I took a few days off of work and going back should have been easy but the first day left me sore and shattered. 

As always when life gets challenging, I have gone back to basics. I have been concentrating on the gentle routine of my home – cooking, cleaning and minding cheeky children. I have been doing things slowly, taking naps when I need them and leaving things undone when I am tired. Little Lady has realised that I have been unwell and has been protective and tried to help me as much as she can, including by rounding up and scolding babies.

Tomorrow is the first day of Ramadan. In preparation I have given up coffee and stocked my kitchen with fresh fruit and vegetables. As with the last two years I hope to share healthy meals with my family and take advantage of the midday sunnah nap, the qaylulah. Alhamdulillah, we fast for the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and because it is his command, buy this month always does me so much good – a refresh for my faith and also my body. So I welcome this opportunity during Ramadan to reset the dials of my iman, my health, my intentions and my routine.

May our deeds be with the correct intentions, to please Allah (SWT), and may he be pleased and accepting of our deeds insh’Allah.
