The quote for Day 22 of Ramadan from my
box of things to think about is:
“Of the signs that Allah has turned away from a person is that he
becomes occupied with that which does not concern him” ~ Hassan Al-Basri (RA)
The frightening thing about this reminder
is how easy it can be to steer towards something that is none of your business:
nosiness, casual gossip, being judgemental of others over things that are not
your affair.
I don’t like to ask people personal
questions, because I am wary of asking something that will hurt someone’s
feelings. I often find that people in my
community are quick to ask questions like:
“Why aren’t you married yet?”
“Don’t you want to have children?”
“Do you own your house?”
To me all of them have the potential to
pry and hurt others – what business are these things of ours anyway? I often find that if I don’t ask, people will
talk to me about these things when they are ready themselves.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (Radhi Allahu ‘Anh) who said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu
alaihi wasallam) said: "Part of
the perfection of one's Islam is his leaving that which does not concern
him." (Tirmidhi)
