Which character trait of the Prophet are you grateful for?
I am not sure how the answer this question. How do you even begin
to grasp the beautiful qualities of Allah’s (SWT) most beloved Prophet ṣallallāhu
'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then how do you
begin to weigh up which ones have impacted you the most? I don’t feel equipped
to do that, so I will list some of the character traits of the Prophet that I
am grateful for, with the disclaimer that I know so little of what there is to
know about him.
I am grateful for his example. He is the embodiment of our faith
and the perfect role model for how to practice it through every part and stage
of our life.
I am grateful for how he treated his womenfolk: his love for his
mother, his kindness towards his wives, his affection towards his daughters and
his respectfulness towards women in general. If all of our menfolk could follow
his example, Muslim women would be considered the luckiest of all women.
I am grateful for his merciful and kind nature: he never retaliated
for his own pain, he always forgave, he taught us always to give others the
benefit of the doubt and avoid being harsh.
I am grateful that he had a cheerful and positive disposition,
always smiling and encouraging others towards good. The world has no shortage
of po-faced, self-righteous religious people, I am grateful that he showed us a
better way.
There is so much more and so very much more that I am ignorant of,
but these are a few things
Which character trait of the Prophet are you grateful for?
Now there has come to you a Messenger from among yourselves;
grievous to him is your suffering; anxious is he over you, gentle to the
believers, compassionate. ~ Quran 9:128
Certainly you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent exemplar
for him who hopes in Allah and the latter day and remembers Allah much. ~ Quran
33:21
And indeed, you are of a great moral character. ~ Quran 68:4
Qatadah reported: I said to Aisha (radhiallahu‘anha), “O mother of
the believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah, ṣallallāhu
'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).” Aisha said,
“Have you not read the Quran?” I said, “O course.” Aisha said, “Verily, the
character of the Prophet of Allah was the Quran.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 746)
“God has sent me to perfect good manners and to do good deeds.”
(Bukhari)
“The Prophet (PBUH) did not swear at anyone, nor was He rude, nor
did He curse anyone. If He desired to reprimand someone, He would say: ‘What is
wrong with him, may dust be cast in his face!” (Bukhari)
“The Prophet (PBUH) did not refuse to give anything which He had
to someone if he asked for it.” (Bukhari)
“I have never seen a man who smiled as much as the Messenger of
Allah.” (Tirmidhi)
Aisha (radhiallahu‘anha) narrated: “I once found difficulty in
riding a horse, so I kept reining it in repeatedly. The Prophet ṣallallāhu
'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then said, ‘You
must have gentleness.’” (Muslim)
